Pune to e-tag newborns, mothers to check theft

PUNE, September 4: To check theft or exchange of newborns in civic hospitals, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to installing an electronic system by which the mother and the newborn is tagged till their stay in the hospital.

 

The civic administration initiative is part of the bio-baby project that was approved in the standing committee meeting. The project will be implemented on a pilot basis in the Kamla Nehru Hospital.

 

"The intention is to stop the cases of thefts, exchange of newborn in the hospital and also check female foeticide," said standing committee chairperson Vishal Tambe pointing out the theft cases of newborns.

 

He said the electronic registeration of each pregnant women would be done when she is admitted for child delivery.

 

The newborn and the mother would be registered with the hospital, which would invlove taking impression of footprints of newborn and fingerprint of the mother through electronic machine.

 

The wireless safety tag with coding would be put on the knee of newborn baby and on the wrist of mother. The tags have a computerised registration so every movement of the baby in the maternity home can be tracked on computer. This will help in stopping the theft or exchange of a newborn in the hospital.

 

"If the baby is taken to a distance more than 50 ft from the computerised reading then there is automatic siren that alerts the staff," he said. The coding of the tag on baby and mother ensures that there is no exchange of babies. The computer-registered impression of footprint of newborn and fingerprint of mother will also help in identification of the baby that is found after being stolen.

 

"The PMC will have 150 tags of which 20 would be used for civic hospital staff and the rest for newborn and mother. The project would be implemented at a cost of Rs 75 lakh and would be extended depending on the performance," said acting PMC health chief S T Pardeshi. Around 200 birth take place every month at the Kamla Nehru Hospital, the highest in any of the civic hospitals, he said.

Camera in pen (for gents/school boys)/in locket or pendant for ladies, with link to a website as a webcam, can assist prevention of crime, apprehending guilty speedily.  Further, traffic movement from different parts can be collected easily for effective policing!

Disaster Management or Disastrous Management????

Yesterday, 4 men who were holding their lives on a solo tree in the flooded river in Tamil Nadu were saved by helicopters.  The reaction time of the authorities are noteworthy!!! Even in peace time and pleasant weather, it took more than 12 hours to rescue them!!!  It is really high-time that we analyse the post-operation and fix responsibility on the persons who were responsible for the delay in rescue operations.

Similarly, when a storm hit the chennai marina beach, being available at a stone-throw distance, Navy/Coastal Guard could not react in time and 5 merchant navy personnel lost their lives. 

We tend to forget the tragedies whenever a new one happens!

Is there any SOP available to meet such events?  We need to grow still, it seems! such callous attitude means that the Communication are used only for pleasurable purposes!

Wi-fi at Rly Stn

NEW DELHI, July 28: Waiting for a train's arrival will no longer be boring, as Indian Railways is planning to equip India's busiest station with free Wi-Fi connectivity, the first in the country. New Delhi railway station, which handles about 300 trains and five lakh passengers a day, will be the first Wi-Fi enabled station in the country.

 

"A Mumbai-based company has been given the job to make the New Delhi station a Wi-Fi enabled station," a senior Railway Ministry official said, adding "the company was selected through a tender."  

 

Wi-Fi is a popular networking technology which uses radio waves to provide wireless high-speed Internet and network connections.

 

Once operational, passengers on all 16 platforms of the station will be able to access Wi-Fi from their laptops or mobile phones, the official said.

 

The New Delhi station was chosen on a pilot basis to introduce the facility at an estimated cost of Rs. 80 lakh.

 

"The system is expected to be operational in 3 or 4 months," the official said.

 

The company will install towers at strategic locations to provide the facility, which will be extended to other stations in due course, he said.

 

The Railways has already made Howrah Rajdhani trains Wi-Fi enabled.

 

There are also plans to replace information kiosks with tablet computers at New Delhi station.

 

"We are exploring the option of mounting tablets on walls at certain places on the station for the benefit of passengers. The tablets will be equipped to disseminate information about the train position, expected arrival time and other relevant data required by the passenger," the official said

Every year people travel on pilgrimage, every year casualties happen, but, no preventive measures are taken.  Most of the accidents are repeated ones, for example, boat accidents at Bihar, West Bengal, Assam are frequent occurrences.  Similarly, floods also.

As the saying goes "Prevention is better than Cure", why don't the Government create a permanent committee for Disaster Prevention Advice???

If currency note is manufactured with a chip to trace its location it will help to track the thieves (All colours of criminals included!!!)  Be them White-collar criminals, etc........

If the note is loaded in any ATM machine, looters can be traced easily and with less effort.  Similarly, if the chip loaded currency is handed over to a bribe-seeking official, proving the crime will be easy.
